Il acanthurus coeruleus è diffuso lungo le due coste dell'Atlantico, dove predilige le acque poco profonde e le barriere coralline. L’odore pungente delle sue carni ne riduce il valore commerciale, ma viene talvolta usato come esca o come pesce d’acquario. Le sue spine affilate, però, possono procurare ferite a chi gli si avvicina troppo.
