길이 2-5cm. 수컷은 암컷보다 조금 작다. 첫째 더듬이와 두 번째 胸脚의 부동 손가락이 잎에 크게 확대하는 것이 특징이다. 몸은 유백색에서 흰색. 중앙에서 동쪽 태평양에 서식하는 개체는 노란 인연이있는 보라색 띠는 반점을 가지고 인도 태평양에 서식하는 개체는 푸른 인연이있는 갈색의 띠는 반점이있다. 전자를 H. picta 후자를 H. elegans으로 2 종으로 나눌 수있다.
