The lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) is one of the largest and longest-lived freshwater fish in the world; one specimen was estimated to be 154 years old. This bottom-feeder is native to North American lakes. American colonists initially considered the enormous lake sturgeon a nuisance, but once its flavor came into vogue the species' numbers plummeted. Conservation efforts are still struggling to help it recover.
