Description
Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) is a migrating species of North American herring. Adults live in the West Atlantic Ocean and then migrate to freshwater habitats to spawn, most notably to the Great Lakes. Once so numerous that it used to overcrowd the lake during spawning, alewife is now in decline, so many governing bodies prohibit harvesting.
