New zealand longfin eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) is a freshwater eel species that can be exclusively found in New Zealand. This species is a culturally important food source for the indigenous Māori people, and is still commercially harvested even though its numbers are endangered. New zealand longfin eel are considered difficult to rear in aquaculture due to high rates of eel death, high cost of eel aquaculture, and low market price of the eels.
