A hermaphroditic species, threespot angelfish (Apolemichthys trimaculatus) lives in harems of juveniles and females dominated by a single male. If the male goes missing, a female will change sex to assume his place. Its bright coloring and eponymous spots render this Indo-Pacific native a common aquarium species.
