 In 1991, more than 2000 common jellyfish were launched to space on the space shuttle Columbia as part of a study on the effects of gravity on development. Common jellyfish is a very abundant jellyfish with worldwide distribution. It moves by pulsations and is a common prey to various predators due to its high fatty acid content. A fluorescent protein with industrial applications has been isolated from this species.
