When threatened, the grey triggerfish wedges itself firmly into a hiding spot in the reef by erecting its front dorsal spine. The meat of grey triggerfish is of excellent quality, and it is both commercially harvested and fished recreationally. Like many reef species, numerous cases of ciguatera poisoning have been related to its consumption. The species is listed vulnerable by the IUCN. It is also popular in aquariums.
