 Description

The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a type of carp that has been selectively bred for hundreds or possibly even thousands of years. Most of that breeding was done in ancient China; it was only in 1611 that the first goldfish reached the West, when some were imported to Portugal. This long history of artificial selection has resulted in many varieties to satisfy the whims of aquarists.
