Description
Humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) is native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. Instantly recognized by divers and aquarium visitors by the hump-like structure on the heads of larger adults, this is the largest species of wrasse in existence. Humphead wrasse is listed as an endangered species because of many factors, including overfishing (it is a delicacy in Hong Kong live fish markets, despite the risk of ciguatera poisoning) and capture for the aquarium trade.
