The sponge has a boring lifestyle and can penetrate the substrate a few centimeters deep. The holes themselves have a circular cross-section and can have a diameter of a few (often around 5) millimeters. The boreholes can touch each other, creating a kind of gallery in which only a few perforated walls of the original substrate remain. The entire system of interconnected spaces is filled by the sponge body. The largest part of the sponge is inside this space, only a small part is visible on the surface. This visible part has a honeycomb structure with screen-shaped inflow and outflow openings and is golden yellow, but very occasionally orange.
