Description

Blacktail shiner (Cyprinella venusta) is a small silvery fish from the carp family, native to small- and medium-sized rivers across the United States. It is known to hybridize with the Red shiner (C. lutrensis) in Texas and Illinois. Blacktail shiner has an interesting spawning behavior, with territorial males defending their nesting crevice from other males that are always trying to sneak in and fertilize the eggs left there by their mates.
