Description
The slender-spined porcupine fish (Diodon nicthemerus) is an awkward swimmer found around southern Australia. It stays in shallow waters and feeds on small seafloor-dwelling invertebrates at night. When threatened, the slender-spined porcupine fish will puff its body up - an action which also extends its sharp spines. Its flesh is poisonous to humans (as well as many marine species), further enhancing its defenses.
