Description
Found along the beaches of the Atlantic Coast, the coquina is a small clam that buries itself in the sand. The shell consists of two parts that are hinged at one spot, allowing the siphons and foot of the animal to extend out. One of the siphons takes in air, water and food, while the other expels the waste. The foot-like extension digs into the sand to protect it from birds and other predators.
