The american gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) is a North American river fish that lives in muddy lakes and brackish water. Their diet consists mostly of phytoplankton when they are young and zooplankton and small crustaceans as adults. American gizzard shad are harvested mostly to make animal feed and fertilizer.
