Description
Fantail darter (Etheostoma flabellare) is a small North American fish known for being territorial and defending its eggs against the attacks of many predators in the wild. The fantail darter lives in riffles, or shallow microhabitats in the portions of small streams where the water is moving very quickly. They feed on insects and larvae that float past. As the flow of water changes, these fish drift downstream until they encounter a new riffle.
