To defend itself from predators, the slate pencil urchin uses rounded spines that resemble pencils or chalk sticks. Centuries ago, native Hawaiians once used these spines, detached and dried, to write with. Unlike most urchin species, the spines of the slate pencil urchin are not venomous.
