Description
Ictiobus bubalus has a light to dark brown back and flanks, some of which have a greenish or coppery tone. The fins are light yellow or white. He is often confused with the carp, although he lacks the barbels. Unlike Ictiobus cyprinellus, Ictiobus bubalus has a submissive mouth. Ictiobus bubalus is on average 58 centimeters long, in exceptional cases even up to 112 centimeters. The IGFA record fish weighed 37.3 kilograms and was caught in the Athens Lake in Alabama. He can be up to 15 years old. Ictiobus bubalus is relatively adaptable and inhabits ponds, reservoirs, lakes, canals, and smaller to larger rivers. He prefers clear waters with medium flow. Ideal growth conditions can be found in abundant underwater plants and soft soil. It also tolerates high levels of water hardness, such as those found in the Rio Pecos. Ictiobus bubalus feeds on the bottom of the body of crustaceans and algae, which he grinds with his pharyngeal teeth. The biology of this species is not fully understood yet. It is known that Smallmouth Buffalos spawn at appropriate water temperatures in the spring. The spawn is deposited on water plants or in the mud, partly also on flooded meadows and after one to two weeks the fry hatch.
