Description

Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) is an exotic-looking species of wrasse. All individuals start life as female and later turn into a fully-functioning male. Found in association with reefs in the warm parts of western Atlantic, the species has a "vulnerable" ecological status, partially because it is highly regarded by both commercial and sport fisheries. Its meat carries a risk of ciguatera poisoning.
