Description
With a house of no more than 6 centimeters, this snail is one of the largest freshwater snails in Western Europe, and is also found in Belgium and the Netherlands. The color is brownish gray to horny brown, the house is conical. The house has 4 or 5 turns, the last of which quickly becomes wider and the wall thickness depends somewhat on the water quality. Both the availability of calcium and humus and the acidity of the water play a role in this. The marsh pond snail (Stagnicola palustris) also has a similar house and body shape, but is usually lightly spotted and has a maximum house of 3 cm. The body is dark gray to dark brown in color, the two lower probes are very short; the two upper ones are pointed, flat and stick more sideways (Gittenberger et al., 1998).
