Description
Description
Mastigias papua is an umbrella jellyfish (Scyphozoa) that occurs in lagoons and island lakes in the Pacific Ocean. Due to its mass occurrence in the Ongeim'l Tketau (Quallensee) on the Eiland Eil Malk (Palau) off the island of Koror, the species has found a certain level of awareness among those interested in diving and in the media. However, the taxonomic status of the species and its widespread use are being discussed on the basis of new morphological and molecular data. It is more likely a complex of several cryptic species.
