Atlantic tarpons (Megalops atlanticus) are large ocean fish that can weigh as much as 161 kg. Their meat is largely inedible, but since they are difficult to catch and tend to put on an acrobatic show while on the line, they're a favorite in game-fishing circles. The atlantic tarpon is the official state saltwater fish of Alabama.
