Description
All black grouper individuals start life as female, then take on male characteristics later in each of their lifespans. This solitary species inhabits coral reefs, feeding on smaller fish. They are harvested commercially and fished recreationally, as their meat is considered very tasty, but there have been numerous reports of ciguatera poisoning.
