Mozambique tilapia is an omnivorous fish that sometimes even eats its own young. It lives in groups with a strict hierarchy. Mozambique tilapia is native to southeastern Africa (where it is listed as a vulnerable species) but has been introduced in many tropical and subtropical habitats around the world for sport fishing and population control of other species. In some of these places it is now considered invasive.
