The nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a mostly herbivorous fish with a high reproductive rate. It has been farmed for food in artificial ponds in northern Africa for at least 4000 years, and continue to be popular both fresh and frozen in many markets today. Nile tilapia males build nests for spawning season, but it is the females who care for the young by protecting them in her mouth.
