Description
Although known as the purple sea star, this starfish is highly variable in color; besides purple, it can be orange, yellow, ochre, reddish, or brownish. The number of its limbs can also vary - it commonly has five, but some individuals can develop six or seven, and sometimes only four arms. The purple sea star is a "keystone species," meaning it has a valuable role in the biodiversity of the communities in which it occurs.
