Description

A paternal mouthbrooder, the blackchin tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) will hold clusters of its own young in its mouth for extended periods. It is harvested for human consumption as well as the aquarium trade, and accidental releases from aquaria have resulted in its becoming an extremely invasive species in parts of Florida, Hawaii and the Philippines.
