Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) is a schooling mackerel species living on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. Besides their gregarious nature, they are recognizable for their dark blue, striped upper side, and a silvery-white belly - a pattern that serves to confuse predators (countershading). It is a highly commercial species, with almost 1 million tons of fish caught every year.
