Gilt-head sea bream is an excellent food fish, but it's rarely caught in the wild. Instead, this species is cultivated in saltwater ponds and it's the most frequently farmed fish in the Mediterranean. An historic aquaculture species, evidence of its cultivation dates back to the Pre-Roman period. Unfortunately, pond-farming makes it susceptible to various viral and bacterial diseases.
