Description
The northern puffer (Sphoeroides maculatus) lives along the Atlantic coast of North America. Though the bodies of other pufferfish are poisonous, the northern puffer's flesh can be eaten (carefully, as its organs are still poisonous) and it is sold in markets as "sea squab." Like all puffers, this fish will inflate itself when threatened by drawing air or water into a special pouch near its stomach.
