Pickhandle barracuda (Sphyraena jello) owes its unusual common name to the dark bands of color along its sides, which are said to resemble the thick ends of pickaxe handles. It is a popular gamefish in western Australia, where it most commonly appears near coral reefs and fertile estuaries. It is also commercially harvested to be sold fresh and salted.
