Description
The mussel, also common or small river mussel (Unio crassus), is a shell living in the fresh water, rarely also in the brackish water. The name Bach mussel has become common in the 1980s when it became clear that this species was found almost exclusively in the upper reaches of the waters. However, the species was originally also distributed into the large river systems of the Elbe, Rhine and Danube and is still found in northern Europe in large streams. Therefore, the name Bach mussel is called by some specialists as misleading. In Germany, however, evidence of vital and reproducing populations of this species is currently (2009) limited to smaller river systems and streams.
