African clawed frog is almost totally an aquatic frog species native to lakes and ponds of Sub-Saharan Africa. It was introduced in other parts of the world during the 1950s and became the most common amphibian used in laboratories, mostly for microbiological research. However, laboratory escapees formed invasive populations in many climates.
