Marthasterias glacialis是一個相當大的海星，中央有一個小的圓盤和五個細長的錐形臂。每隻手臂有三列縱向的圓錐形，白色帶刺的棘刺，通常具紫色尖端，每個簇狀花序包圍。背景顏色是可變的，可能是棕褐色或綠灰色，淡黃色或紅色，有時在臂尖處淡紫色。該物種可以長到70厘米（28英寸），但更常見的大小是25到30厘米（10到12英寸）。它有時與北方海星Leptasterias muelleri混淆。
